A Brief History of Merritt Assembly
Merritt Assembly of God was founded June 8, 1952. Founding Pastor, Rev. Michael Lamonica, began looking to start a church in the Merritt Park Place area of Central Merritt Island. God led him to a building on the corner of Grove Street and Tangerine Avenue. After praying over the property, the owner of the property called out to him and expressed his desire to sell the property so a church could be established.
For over 58 years Merritt Assembly of God has been presenting the good news of Jesus Christ not only to Merritt Island, but around the world through Missions. In 1957 under Pastor Tom Shields, a sanctuary was built that replaced the previous structure. In the 1960's another building was added that now serves as classrooms, a fellowship hall, and administrative offices.
In December of 1992, the Pen-Florida District Council of the Assemblies of God asked Bob and Cindy Arthurs to come and pastor the church. They have now served the church and the community of Merritt Island for almost 18 years. We believe that if we will focus on building the Kingdom of God, God will focus on building this congregation.
The foundation of Merritt Assembly of God has helped it to endure for over 58 years. While we celebrate our past, we are pressing forward to what God has in store for our future. We invite you to come and make history with us.
